The German Bundesliga restarts this weekend after enjoying a six week invigorating Winter break. Bayern Munich resume on top, but having hit a flat spot leading into Christmas the Bavarians’ lead has been whittled down to just goal difference by a resurgent Werder Bremen. Bettors look set for another exciting title race, after last season’s show-stopper, when the advantage swung back and forth between several sides, before Stuttgart took the honours.

Bayern Munich resume their challenge for the Bundesliga title, looking to raise their performance levels having limped into the Christmas period on the back of four goalless draws in seven league games. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side are still chasing three trophies, having beaten third division opposition in the German Cup on Tuesday, while resuming their UEFA Cup challenge in ten days time. However, after such a blistering start to the season, some worrying signs have crept in, particularly the lack of league goals.
Bayern concluded their preparations with a disappointing 1-1 home Derby draw with TSV 1860 on January 26th, but five past third division opposition in Tuesday night’s German Cup win. They face a road trip to struggling Hansa Rostock on Friday, without long-term casualties Marcell Jansen and Lukas Podolski, and with uncertainty over Bastian Schweinsteiger and Andreas Ottl’s participation. Rostock went into the break boosted by a 2-0 win over Bochum that lifted them out of the relegation zone, and their close season preparations included a 2-0 win over Iran.

Werder Bremen finished last year in excellent form, reducing the gap with the Bayern Munich to just goal difference. They ended the year winning five of their last six league games averaging over three goals per game. They boast the league’s best home record, winning eight consecutive games at the Weserstadion, and looking to make it nine with the visit of Bochum on Sunday. They were however, dumped out of the German Cup by Dortmund on Tuesday night.
Bochum went into the Winter break on the back of some disappointing results, taking one point from their last three games, leaving them hovering above the relegation zone. They did however, enjoy a confidence boosting 3-0 friendly win over Koblenz of the Bundesliga 2, on Sunday, but their recent history away to Werder isn’t encouraging. Bremen have won the last two encounters at the Weserstadion by an aggregate of 7-0 and PinnacleSports.com make them favourites on their Asian Handicap priced to less than 102%.
