Ottmar Hitzfeld, the most successful coach in Bundesliga history, has announced that he will take over as manager of the Swiss national team in July. In what could be his last season coaching in the Bundesliga, he will be desperate to keep Bayern Munich at the top of the table, right up to the final day.

Sunday’s clash between Bayern Munich and Hamburg is a real North versus South affair. Munich – the Bundesliga leaders – are the most southerly side in the German first division, while HSV is at the opposite end of the country. Both clubs have a long tradition in the German top flight, so there have been numerous clashes over the years, and this encounter ranks as another key meeting. Bayern Munich currently top the division, while Hamburg slipped into third place last weekend. Both clubs enjoyed 3-0 wins last weekend, and were also engaged in UEFA Cup action on Thursday. In terms of recent meetings the advantage lies with the visitors who won on their last two visits to the Allianz Arena by the same 2-1 score-line. A similar result here would cement HSV’s claim for a Champions League spot and put them right in the frame for the title, but Bayern Munich remain unbeaten at home.

Only goal difference separates fourth placed Bayer Leverkusen and fifth placed Schalke, who meet in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Both sides will be targeting to finish within the three Champions League positions, but a title charge isn’t out of the question. Schalke are currently well placed in the current Champions League, having beaten Porto 1-0 at the Veltins Arena on Tuesday night, while Leverkusen were also involved in European action having faced Galatasaray on Thursday night in the UEFA Cup. Schalke experienced their only defeat in thirteen games last weekend at home to Wolfsburg, but the Wolves are the Bundesliga’s form side in 2008, putting that result into perspective. Leverkusen’s have lost just once at the BayArena in the league, and that was a single goal defeat to Bayern Munich, so clearly the Factory Squad are tough to beat on their own patch. On recent form and table position, this should be a tight game; the sides drew the reverse fixture 1-1 last August.
