Reigning Bundesliga Champions, VFB Stuttgart, maintained the upward curve of their form, winning 1-0 at home to Hamburg last Saturday, despite the absence of striker, Mario Gomez, who remains side-lined. Having been languishing toward the bottom of the Bundesliga, Stuttgart are now in fifth position, and within reach of a Champions League qualification berth, which would cap a remarkable turn-around. Coach, Felix Magath, has guided them to an eight game unbeaten run, which has included victories over the teams currently in third and fourth. That augurs well for Sunday’s visit to sixth placed Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen have a strong record at the BayArena, having lost just twice at home this season, but they appear to have been distracted by their UEFA Cup participation. The Factory Squad have lost three Bundesliga games on the bounce, and the 4-1 home demolition by Zenit Petersburg, in their first leg quarter-final will have demoralised the side further, with the return game in Moscow a dead rubber. Michael Skibbe must now rally his side to finish the domestic season strongly, and thereby earn another crack at European competition next term. Leverkusen won this fixture 3-1 last season, so Skibbe will hope for a repeat score-line.
