Last week’s Serie A results could have killed off the title race, as defending Champions, Inter Milan, now hold an eleven point lead over Roma. It would take a seismic drop in form for the Nerazzurri to relinquish that lead, but that doesn’t mean the interest in the Italian league ends for bettors.

Juventus coach, Claudio Ranieri, has publicly conceded that his side cannot catch runaway Serie A leaders, Inter Milan. However, he would consider it a success, in his first season in charge of the club, for Juve to finish in second place. The club is still in transition following the penalties of Calciopoli, and qualification for the Champions League is a critical element of the rehabilitation process.
The home win over second placed Roma last weekend, courtesy of a Del Piero goal, brought the Old Lady within one point of overturning the Giallorossi. A further win this Saturday at Reggina, could be enough to dislodge Roma, who face a tough game at home to Fiorentina. Reggina are second from bottom of the Serie A table, having lost four consecutive league fixtures. They started the season awfully, sacking Massimo Ficcadenti in November, but replacement boss, Renzo Ulivieri, is fairing no better, and Saturday’s game at home to Juve is likely to be another struggle.

Roma coach, Luciano Spalletti, is concerned over the recent sluggish league form of his side. Last weekend’s league defeat to Juventus effectively ended their title hopes, and there was an ugly bust up between Christian Panucci and Alberto Aquilani at their training ground in midweek. Their midweek 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid will however, have provided a much need tonic, ahead of the visit of Fiorentina to the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
La Viola have lost just one of their last eight Serie A games, though that was another key top of the table clash at home to AC Milan, ending 1-0 to the visitors. That allowed Milan to close on Fiorentina in the battle for the fourth all-important Champions League spot. Defeat again here away to Roma, would deal a heavy blow to Fiorentina’s pretensions of playing on the big stage next season. In five games so far this season against Juve, Inter, AC Milan and Roma, La Viola have managed three draws and two defeats, suggesting they still have something to find to close the gap in class with the big boys of Italian football.
