Third placed Juventus will look to consolidate third place in Serie A, and the Champions League qualification that it provides, hosting fifth place AC Milan, themselves desperate to qualify for the competition they won last season. Milan’s season has been the most disappointing for many years, but if they can squeeze into the fourth Champions League spot, all would not be lost for boss, Carlo Ancelotti. He has recently received public support from the club’s owner, Silvio Berlusconi, who has been playing up a number of potential summer signings, but this cannot mask the current crisis.
Milan’s failure to play on the big stage next season would be a disaster, and they are not helped in this critical game away to Juventus, by the suspension of Alessandro Nesta, and injury to defender, Massimo Oddo. Ancelotti will draw some comfort from the return to the side of Pippo Inzaghi who scored twice in last Saturday’s 3-1 win over struggling Cagliari. His opposite number, Claudio Ranieri, was left ruing missed chances as Juventus experienced a demoralising 3-2 defeat in Sicily. Alessandro Del Piero scored twice and surpassed Gaetano Scirea’s appearance record for the Old Lady, but the shine was taken off his achievement by a last minute Palermo winner.

Inter Milan could take a huge step toward the successful defence of the Scudetto on Sunday should they take three points at home to fourth placed Fiorentina. Having led at one stage by 11 points, Inter have seen their lead whittled down as disappointing results followed exit from the Champions League. Coach, Roberto Mancini, was encouraged by the weekend’s 2-0 win at Atlanta, achieved without key strikers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Suazo, who remain injury doubts. With only six fixtures remaining, and their closest rival Roma, demoralised by Champions League exit, things are looking up for Inter.
Fiorentina were in action in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night in Holland, beating PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to reach the semi-finals, which may have an impact on their preparations for this key fixture. La Viola will be desperate to move up to the Champions League next season, having been denied participation last season due to their involvement in the match-fixing scandal. It make things even sweeter were they to claim that place at the expense of AC Milan (snapping at their heels in the table) who they aim to supersede as one of Serie A’s elite. Star striker, Adrian Mutu, was on target in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Reggina, and scored a brace against PSV on Thursday night; the Romanian will be a big threat to the Nerazzurri.
